In short, what happens is that when Windows is downloading updates, something goes wrong. Select all the files in this Download directory, and delete them.Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.That’s not surprising, since you know your system is ready. Microsoft itself will tell you to download a 360MB “System Readiness Tool”. There is a very simple fix for this problem, and you don’t have download anything, or edit the registry, or perform any other gymnastics! You’d think that since Windows knows it can’t install the updates, it would try to download them again…īut no! I just sits there and tries to install the corrupted update packages again, and again, and again.

Well, normally you’d just click the button and try to install them again. It tries to install them, but fails with some kind of “0x800*****” error code. This one is a really, really fun problem: You dutifully let Windows download updates.
